On September 29, 1999
Renault acquired 51% of Romanian motor manufacturer
DACIA for US$ 50 million. In May
2001, it increased its stake to 92.72%.
The two manufacturers had already forged close ties
in the 1960s and 1970s, when DACIA
made Renault 12s under licence. RENAULT
plans to invest about 356 million Euro in DACIA over
five years to upgrade its site in terms of technology
and productivity. The aim is to design a modern vehicle
that can be sold for EUR 5,000, which should enable
the RENAULT GROUP to win market share
in emerging economies.
Besides DACIA, RENAULT imports
and distributes cars in Romania by a 100% RENAULT
BRANCH, having a solid leading position among
the imported brands, with a goal of selling 10.000
cars by 2003.
